Looking for some great gifts for the person who is working on their voice? They may be a public speaker, singer or actor? Or maybe you are a speaker, singer or actor looking for some items to round out a gift list you are giving to someone else? The Voice Love Co. has got you covered with some of our favorite items for the voice geek on your list…or for a voice geek like YOU!
Humidifier For the Voice
An ultrasonic humidifier like this one from Levoit is a wonderful gift for anybody who wants to keep their voice healthy, especially if they live in a dry climate. This whisper-quiet machine boasts the ability to produce either warm or cool mist, tells you the actual humidity level around it, keeps itself germ-free and has a remote control so you don’t even have to get out of bed to bump the level of mist up or down. Love it!
A Nasal Irrigation System
You may be laughing hysterically at me right now, but I can take it. While decidedly unsexy, nasal irrigation is a huge gift to your voice and one that you should be taking advantage of daily. Since your sinuses are resonators, the sound that your voice produces bounces off of these areas before it leaves your noggin. You want your sinuses to be healthy and clear in order to help you produce great sound.
So, even though you might get some laughs giving this gift or putting it on your ask list, the joke is really on your pesky post-nasal drip that has plagued your voice with constant irritation for years. It also takes your chances of catching a cold or flu down tremendously because you are regularly washing out the sinuses before infection can take hold, making it a huge help for the working vocal pro who cannot afford to be sick.
This machine from Navage is a powered system that takes care of a few problems we see with using a Netti pot or squeeze bottle. First, it has proprietary, sterile saline pods, keeping you safe from the potential of putting harmful germs inside the sinuses that you get when using boiled tap water or distilled water. Second, it is quick. It automatically pulls the saline through the sinuses with powered suction. Third, it eliminates the mess of traditional nasal irrigation, thus making it faster and easier to do. You will be more consistent adding this important hygiene item to your routine using the Navage, and your voice will thank you! And this one has a nifty travel case for your voice pro-on-the-go to throw it in their gig bag.
A Voice Mister
MyPurMist is a personal steam inhaler that many vocal professionals use before and after they take the stage. You load the inhaler with the company’s proprietary ultra pure, sterile ampoules, once again eliminating the danger of using tap water. Place it over your nose and mouth to deliver hydration and moisture directly to the vocal folds as part of your warm-up and/or cool down routine. If you struggle with feeling like your voice is always dry, this machine can help. The fact that the mist is cool and refreshing means it can be used even if you already have your make up done for your performance.
Here’s the Tea…
And now for an easy stocking stuffer for any vocalist on your list: Throat Coat Tea.
I have sworn by this stuff for years, using it liberally as a daily part of my vocal routine. It keeps the voice nice and warmed up after vocalizing. I’ve had pots and pots of it with my fellow cast members backstage in the shows we’ve been part of to soothe vocal fatigue. It contains slippery elm, a natural vocal lubricant that eases your vocal folds into a smooth connection. The taste is not always a crowd favorite. I have found that it grows on you after awhile. The benefits far outweigh the flavor profile. Some of my clients have found that adding a little honey and lemon makes it more palatable. I prefer it just as it is. This tea alleviates that pesky cotton mouth that can crop up with nerves during a presentation or performance. It also loosens any phlegm or congestion. Great for sore throats, it should be kept in your healing arsenal at all times.
Voice Spray
Entertainer’s Secret is a vocal spray that many speakers and singers swear by for a dry and hoarse voice. Use it if you are going to a conference where you will be using your voice for hours on end. Also great when you know you will be doing lots of talking in a loud environment. Having a bottle of this always in your bag can be a voice saver. It soothes and relaxes your larynx and keeps your voice going strong hour after hour.
Three Great Vocal Mics
Every vocalist who speaks or sings live needs a good, sturdy mic of their own. The Shure SM58 is a workhorse mic, used widely in a variety of live or recording situations. It is one of the best selling mics in the world. It is easy to use and get a good sound out of. Reliable and durable, any vocalist on your list would be thrilled to receive it.
For the podcaster on your list, this Blue Snowball mic set up would be much appreciated. This USB mic has a surprisingly great sound. Additionally, it is easy as pie to use. The mic has the ability to switch it to pick up sound in three different ways. This model comes with a nifty stand. Attach to your work station, adjust to your height and off you go!
Here is a great gift for the public speaker on your list. This is by far the best wireless mic system if they prefer to use a headset. Not every venue can offer wireless microphones, especially if your vocalist speaks on the high school or even college circuit. This Shure BLX14R is on the pricey side, but the quality will serve them well for years to come.
